What is it?

Our book groups are just as much about forming new connections and creating interesting conversations as they are about analysing texts. Sessions take place in cultural venues and are run by a ‘reader in residence’ who will choose the books and guide the conversation so that everyone gets to share their views. New Writing North already runs book groups across the region, and so you are not only joining a local group but also networking into a regional group that often hosts collaborative events. You will also be advised on how to keep your group going beyond the end of the Art for Art’s Sake project.

Who is it for?

The groups are aimed at women who are thinking of returning to work, who work freelance or run small businesses, allowing a dynamic network of business support and encouragement to emerge.

What will I be doing?

A book group is a group of people who meet to discuss a book or books that they have read and express their opinions, likes, dislikes, etc. You will be guided by a professional author, and you will have the opportunity to share your ideas and thoughts on a wide range of topics as well as building your confidence.

You will be invited to attend a collaborative book group event at Live Theatre in Newcastle in March 2010 to meet other readers, network with new groups and find out how you can continue to be involved in creative reading in the North East.

What will this do for me?

Find a new way to network with interesting people, to share ideas and increase your confidence by participating in a book group.

What is it?

These workshops are designed to improve your command of language and communication, by exposing the power of the written word and exploring your own creativity. The two sessions are led by leading North East writers, Linda France and Ellen Phethean.

Who's it for?

These workshops are for beginners, and for people who are confident in writing but who would like to extend their confidence with words.

What will I be doing?

The Blank Page with Linda France

Join poet Linda France for a day of creative writing. In the morning the workshop will focus on creative journal writing – how to write about real life and capture real events and experiences. In the afternoon you will be taken through the process of how to write a poem.

Starting the Write with Ellen Phethean

If you’ve always wanted to write creatively but have never devoted any serious time to trying to do so this workshop is for you. Aimed at beginners who would like to learn how to develop their work this workshop will give you great ideas for starting to write and help you plan to develop and improve your writing.

What will this do for me?

Creative writing workshops will empower you to be confident in expressing yourself more clearly in words, both in written and verbal situations, and they create great networking opportunities

Take part in a two-hour creative writing workshop which explores how you can begin to write about those life-changing events, whether in fiction or in life-writing.

Fiona Shaw began writing her first book following her treatment for post-natal depression after the birth of her second child. What initially began as a way of regaining the lost memories ended with the critically acclaimed and disturbing study, Out of Me, which was first published in 1997. Her first novel The Sweetest Thing, was published in 2003, followed by The Picture She Took in 2005.

Second in our ‘At home with WINners’ series, this event is your chance to hear from our current Entrepreneur of the Year, Rebecca Howard of award-winning communications agency Cynergy.

Hear who and what has inspired Rebecca to achieve outstanding success through a business that stays true to her core values. She’ll share openly and honestly how she and her team have navigated the highs and the lows of business, and how she came to win three major business awards in one year. Rebecca’s presentation will be followed by plenty of time to ask questions and network with other WIN members and attendees.

Also sharing her secrets of success will be Emily Humphrys from Cambridge Research Biochemicals, current holder of the Innovation through Technology Award. Cambridge Research Biochemicals (CRB) was bought by Emily Humphrys and Alison White in February 2000 in a management buy-out from the specialty chemical company, Avecia, formerly part of Zeneca and ICI. The two women had met 10 years earlier, in 1990, while working at what was then ICI. They remain the two sole owners and executive directors of CRB. The company has since taken on a non-executive Chairman and a number of specialist advisors to increase the management input and explore new growth opportunities

Due to demand and the addition of another inspiring speaker, the venue for this event has changed to Thistle Hotel, Middlesbrough. Teas and coffees will be available on arrival with light snacks after the talks and a glass of wine to help you network.

The event, called Wasted!, will focus on the importance of ‘closing’ sales, with advice on how to create urgency in sales meetings without appearing pushy, the relevance of triggering buyer “pain and need” and the importance of maximising on every relationship during the sales process.

It will take place over the course of an afternoon and is free of charge. It has been organised by the Quaker Chapter of the BNI. Dublin-born Jackie is the MD of Winning Sales, a company committed to working with organisations to drive business forward and increase profitable sales and has 24 years of experience in that field.

“Too often, companies spend time and money on creating or doing great marketing which generates interest and inquiries but stops there – No sale,” said sales guru Jackie. “Whether networking, mailshots, websites, brochures, the ultimate output is business, either in the short or long term, otherwise the marketing spend is wasted.

“So my talk is about maximising on your sales and marketing investment and actually closing. How good are you and your team at closing sales? Do you know? Do you tend to have great meetings, nice chats and then wonder why the business isn't coming in? Where could you be going wrong?

“Quite often, we can be good at building relationships but struggle to actually turn these into commercial opportunities in a timely fashion. Often we’re nervous about being too pushy or aggressive and being perceived as too ‘salesy’. Is there a balance to be struck between rapport building and actually closing out the deal? Over the past four decades Sadie the Bra Lady has been fulfilling the region’s underwear needs at her North East stores, as well as helping hundreds of cancer sufferers get the support they need from their bras with her specialist mastectomy bra fittings service.

Now the award-winning businesswoman is offering a new kind of support, with a fundraising fashion show at the Rainton Meadows Arena, Houghton-Le-Spring in aid of Breast Cancer research.

All the models for the show, which is being held on October 21, 2010, are being recruited from cancer groups across the region and will include female sufferers and survivors the disease.

They will be strutting their stuff in fashions provided by retailers from across the North East, with Sadie herself providing the underwear.

I hope the fashion show will help raise awareness about women facing cancer, and give hope to those suffering by mixing with survivors,” said Sadie.

“By using models from cancer support groups across the North East we hope it will give visitors the chance to see the kind of people their money could be helping and what a difference their donations can make.”

Born in Saltburn and raised in Middlesbrough, Peter joined The Northern Echo in 1984 and rose from reporter to Deputy Editor before joining the Hartlepool Mail as editor in 1997. He returned to The Northern Echo a year later as Editor following Andrew Smith’s move to Northeast Press to take up an appointment as Editor of the Sunderland Echo and editorial director.

Peter also runs training courses around the country for news editors and is a former UK columnist of the year. Married with four children, his light-hearted experiences of parenthood form the basis for a regular column, Dad At Large, which was adapted into a successful book now in its fourth edition.

Peter also serves on the board of Darlington Partnership, is Trustee of the Tony Blair Sports Foundation and a Governor of Sports Aid.

Child poverty is everybody's business.

Figures report that one in three children in the UK live in poverty, and research shows that it impacts on a child's health, education and life expectancy.

This national conference will give you the opportunity to hear about and discuss some of the key issues, policies and plans to tackle child poverty.

With presentations from the Government's Child Poverty Unit, the Child Poverty Action Group, C4EO and Save the Children; and workshops by the National Children's Bureau, Fairbridge Training, Citizens Advice and Youth Access.

Previous NAVCA conferences around the change for children agenda have proved popular with local support and development organisations, voluntary organisations and community groups from across England and this low cost event is expected to book up quickly. Charity netball tournament in aid of Macmillan and Breast Cancer

r//evolution marketing are holding a mixed sex netball tournament. The event, to take place at Quorum Business Park on the 7th of November will be in aid of both breast cancer and Macmillan. Two charities that are very close to the hearts of the r//evolution team.

The tournament aims to be a fun afternoon and teams can be made up from any mixture of businesses, colleagues, friends, family or clients. Teams have already entered from a number of agencies and businesses in the region.

Event organiser, Louise Kitchingham comments: ‘October is breast cancer awareness month and I really wanted to do something to raise funds yet have fun at the same time. We, like many other companies, often use the excuse that we are too busy to take the time out of work to raise money for a good cause. So I thought, if I organise it – all people have to do is turn up and enjoy themselves! The teams can be mixed, but I will leave it up to the boys to decide if they want to wear skirts or not!’

Described by the Guardian newspaper as a ‘symbol of bright ideas in creative marketing’, r//evolution is a full service marketing company established in 2002. Connect are working with Gateshead Council and WIN to produce the TEDxGateshead event which is a direct live stream from the TEDWomen event held in Washington DC.

TEDWomen will take place on December 7th and 8th and we will be live streaming the event on Wednesday 8th December. TEDWomen will reveal:

Who are the women leading change?
What ideas are they championing?
How will they shape the future?

What is TEDx?

This event will outline how small businesses can deploy a process to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of their new product or service development process.

The keynote speaker is Dr Derek Ford from the Institute for Manufacturing at Cambridge who was involved in the development of Design Network North’s range of ‘Design Performance’ workshops. Derek brings a wide range of experiences of how new products are developed in small and medium sized enterprises across the UK and alongside Derek we aim to have several local businesses present their own experiences of their development process.

This event is intended to inform you of good practices in the process of designing new products and services and is also an opportunity to quiz the speakers and to share your particular experiences and issues on the subject with other businesses in the audience.

Workshops in more depth (afternoon)

From 11.30 until 1.30pm there is an opportunity for a maximum of 12 businesses to discuss in more depth about their requirements and how the workshops can help with Dr Derek Ford from the Institute for Manufacturing at Cambridge.

Born and raised in Gateshead, Lilian Mains was made redundant in 1996, two months short of her 50th birthday.

Undeterred, she saw redundancy as an opportunity to begin her own business launching Zodiac Training in 1996 from an office in Sunderland with one member of staff. She now has 150 employees and works with over 900 businesses throughout the region

Unique is a much overused superlative, however, The Arc in Stockton can proudly claim it as an understatement. On one evening, Wednesday January 19th under one roof, The Arc will be hosting the following talents in one showcase event;

Paintings by Jayamina De Silva, Sri Lankan born Chinese trained artist, Photographs by Teesside born photographer and digital media artist Shirley Anne Wood, Comedy Performance Poetry by Northumberland resident mixed race comedy performance poet and author Amanda Baker, Film of work by North East based theatre practitioner actress and writer Sue Buchan plus multi talented Geordie visual storyteller, musician and designer Hayley Rodgers.

Supported by The Arc’s energetic development programme, the showcase grew from Proact and was the brainchild of Proact founder Sue Buchan. Proactive Partnerships operates as a collaborative, networking, supportive hub for women arts practitioners. Sue Buchan who is co-ordinating the January showcase said,

“The women strutting their stuff in January are diverse exciting practitioners whose work attracted my attention because of its vibrancy, professionalism contemporary appeal and innovation. Each of these artists is offering a multitude of skills and talents. I’m very excited that we have been able to land this remarkable event in such a great venue.”

The Pick ‘n Mix showcase is open to members of the public. Programmers, funders and venue managers can arrange to be included on a guest list by contacting The Arc directly. THE REASON

Every two minutes someone in the UK hears the words ‘you have cancer’.

Cancer Research UK needs sponsorship from one or more sponsors to enable all the money raised at the event to fund our world class research into gynaecological cancers such as ovarian, cervical and womb cancer.

Currently 50 women a day in the UK are diagnosed with a gynaecological cancer and 20 die. In the UK, ovarian cancer has the worst survival rate of all the gynaecological cancers. Around 6,850 cases are diagnosed each year and around 4,370 women die from the disease.

Progress is being made but there is still so much more to be done. Cancer Research UK’s work is funded entirely by the public and it is only with this support that we can continue our life saving work.

A new type of business has been quietly emerging over the past several years. Up and down the country growing numbers of businesses are choosing to start up and, more importantly, to remain based at home.
The growth of virtual organisations, technological advances, growing numbers of self employed people, environmental concerns about reduced carbon footprints, increased frustrations with long commuting times and the recent economic climate are all contributing to the shift to more mobile and flexible ways of working. These in turn, reduce demands for permanent external offices. Home based workers are doing business in China and Sri Lanka. The boundary less organization is a feature of the environment we are operating in. Flexible working demands more flexible workspace and the home office is now the number one choice for many – even more so when Office space in Britain has been deemed as the most expensive in the world.
So if you part of, or thinking of joining the significant, and growing, band of people who now run their businesses from home then this workshop is for you. It is based on WIN’s extensive research with those already running their own businesses from home.
Our key message is that there is no right or wrong way of running your own home based business. The most important thing is to make it work for you and part of this is about ensuring an appropriate work/life blend. Gone are the days when work was seen as a destination – a factory, office or shop. Nowadays it is more of an activity that is increasingly being conducted anytime, anyplace, anywhere.
The main issues that arose from our research that were seen as challenges were the issues of Isolation which is why networking (both face to face and online) is so important and also the problems of IT – where do we go for support?
The workshop will be conducted By Dinah Bennett WIN Board Director from The International Centre for Entrepreneurship and Enterprise and Phil Gamble an IT support Consultant. They will share with you some useful tips and techniques, so that you are better able to work from home profitably, productively and enjoyably. Working life doesn’t get much better than that!

Silent Selling will be led by Hayley Rodgers. Hayley has over 12 years’ experience within the retail industry. Before setting up Vistory, she worked as an interior designer for Beaverbrook’s the Jewellers, The Body Shop and Austin Reed and as head of visual merchandising and communication for IKEA Wembley - London. In 2004 she moved back to her home city of Newcastle where she ran the visual merchandising and graphic design department of Fenwick, Newcastle. She is also lectures part time at the University of Northumbria on the Fashion Communication course.

Louise worked in the chemicals industry on Teesside for 15 years and after returning to work after having her eldest daughter decided on a change in direction. A general lack of enthusiasm for any in-depth antenatal care available when she was having her second child inspired her to start her business.

Effective presentation skills are more than just having the confidence to speak in public. The ability to develop and prepare for a presentation is also essential. This session will enable you to prepare for successful presentations. By the end of the event you will be able to:

Identify and use techniques for effective planning and preparation
Establish methods to ensure you can confidently handle audience questions
Develop a personal action plan so you can apply the learning to the next stage of the presentation process - the delivery.

A follow up event in July/August will be held on the delivery stage.

Ideal for anyone with little or no experience in developing presentations or if you do have experience but would like to brush up your knowledge in this area and receive some feedback from a supportive facilitator.

This event will be focused in terms of content to cover the key things to be aware of. We believe training should be practical so you will be required to bring a short presentation you have developed or ideas for a presentation so you can work on it in the session.

The Butterfuly Programme

The Butterfly Programme encourages you to recognise and celebrate your skills, abilities and achivements thereby increasing self-esteem, confidence and resilience. All women in the group learn to support one another in personal challenge, growth and change. It will:

Give you time to think about yourself
Help you take control of your life
Help you become more resilient to day to day demands
Help you embrace positive change and make new friends

You will join a small group of around ten women to work through self-esteem issues that are holing you back in life. Techniques include giving you tools to question, listen and generate ideas to help you move forard; coaching in pairs; and peer to peer solving of real life issues.

The programme consists of four sessions held once a week throughout July. There is a Wednesday group which will meet at the Tyneside Cinema and a Thursday group which will meed in Newcastle at a venue to be confirmed.

Creative Pattern Design in Corsetry

Whether inspired by Edwardian diagonals, Victorian gussets, or your own quirky ideas, you will come away from your class with the skills and confidence required to produce corsets that have a new layer of surface detail to them. Corsets that give a different personalised silhouette. Corsets where every seam is truly bespoke.

The workshop will allow you to study and explore creative corset patterning, including garments that cover more of the body. Bring along your own toile for re-patterning, or experiment and collaborate on a new design with me. We will take our plain vertically-seamed toiles (I advise midbust, but you are welcome to bring underbust or overbust toiles, as you prefer) and transform each side into a new design (featuring shaped inserts, gussets or swooping seams), before transferring that information onto paper for future use and refinement.

Level - Intermediate/Advanced. You will ideally have made a few well-fitting corsets, and be familiar with plain, lapped and felled seams, and different types of coutil. You will probably have attempted using complicated historical patterns (eg: Edwardian) or self-drafts. If you’re worried you skill level isn’t high enough, don’t panic, just contact me to discuss.

You will learn how to create new unusual corset patterns from an existing bodice block, creating beautiful figure forming garments. You will leave with a totally unique pattern designed around your body. Please note that if you book the day before, I will not have time to produce a toile for you! If you are at all concerned, double check with me first.

EQUIPMENT NEEDED: – Notebook and pencils/pens – French curve or other curved patterning rule – Dressmaking scissors – Your own well-fitting non-stretch bodice/dress block for re-patterning. Students may, if they prefer, order a standard sized midbust corset toile with closed front from me, which they will be able to use for re-patterning on the day.

Gliterary Lunch – 10 November 2011 - 12-3pm

We are just reminding you that Gliterary Lunches will be back in Newcastle on 10th November, so if you are thinking of treating yourself and/or your clients this Autumn, they are now taking bookings. Once again they have two great speakers, a glass or two of bubbly, delicious food and of course chocolate, courtesy of the sponsors, Galaxy.

They are particularly excited to be welcoming Victoria Hislop who shot into the best sellers list in 2006 with her first novel, The Island. Married to Ian (of Private Eye fame) she started out as a journalist and has now written three novels. She will be talking about the latest of these, The Thread which is set in Greece and is an evocative tale of love, loyalty and loss. Victoria is a really interesting speaker who is fascinating on the subject of her research.

Helen Walsh is their second speaker. She too made a splash with her first novel, Brass which painted a shocking portrait of a young girl called Millie. Her absorbing second novel, Once Upon A Time in England was one of our favourite Gliterary reads. Now she has written Go To Sleep, an unflinching tale of a new mother who finds herself sliding out of control as the effects of sleep deprivation take hold. Helen has spoken at several of our events before and is engagingly candid about the influences on her writing.

The lunch is on 10th November, 12-3pm and will be held at the elegant Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Street. Tickets are £55 each (incl VAT). You can join one of their networking tables or take a full table of 10. Books and wine can be ordered as required.

The ladies lunch club is a new initiative introduced by Josie’s Dragonfly Trust, to gather together likeminded people once a month to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, share great food and listen to wonderful speakers. Tickets are priced at £25, including a 3 course meal of traditional British food produced from local and seasonal ingredients and an inspirational guest speaker. The Lunch Club with Josie's Dragonfly Trust takes place on the last Friday of every month. The next one is the 30th March 12noon at the Duke of Wellington in Newton.

The money raised from the monthly events will help Josie’s Dragonfly Trust to continue to brighten the lives of children and young people living with cancer by enabling them to create some very special memories. To date, our charity has given out 371 cash gifts of £500 totalling an amazing £185,500.00 and we would be unable to do this without your kind support.

The ladies lunch club, established in February 2012, is the latest initiative of Josie’s Dragonfly Trust, which gathers together like-minded women once every two months to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, great food and wonderful speakers. Since its introduction, Josie’s Dragonfly Trust have hosted two successful lunch clubs, which were greatly enjoyed by all in attendance, in the familiar surroundings of The Duke of Wellington Inn, Newton. This beautiful venue allows diners to experience magnificent views over the Tyne Valley whilst enjoying a fine dining experience, prepared by Master Chef Finalist head chef, John Calton. In addition to enjoying a magnificent meal, attendants will also be treated to a make-up demonstration, from the House of Frasier’s professional make-up and perfume team. The skilled and experienced team will provide make-up tips and advice for creating various fashionable looks, demonstrating on a number of selected guests, providing them with a professional, personal make over.

Tickets are priced at £25, including a 3 course meal of traditional British food produced from local and seasonal ingredients and a guest speaker. Get Mentoring - an introduction to business mentoring

We are aware that many people were not able to make the recent Get Mentoring workshops delivered by DEAL Group, so are offering one last workshop on Thursday 24th May (9.30am - 1.00pm) in Newcastle for those who are still keen to take part in the free training and become a mentor.

This free half day introductory workshop, delivered by DEAL Group in partnership with SFEDI (the Small Firms Enterprise Development Initiative), will introduce you to a range of mentoring skills and give you the tools to become an effective mentor.

‘Get Mentoring’ is part of a major government initiative to train those who work with, in and for small businesses to become business mentors. Those who complete the training receive a year’s free membership to the IOEE (Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurs), a SFEDI Certificate of Recognition and are allowed to deliver mentoring to any type of micro, small and medium sized business. Once recognised as a mentor, all we ask is that you commit at least one hour a month free mentoring.

Mentoring is a two-way process. As well as offering to share your experience to help others, it can give you personal fulfilment from investing in those you mentor, stimulate your own learning and improve your own development and performance.

If you are unable to make it, you can also opt to do the training online.

Alternatively, if you wish to arrange a group booking of 10-16 people before the end of May, then contact us to arrange a workshop either on your premises or at a suitable venue.
